Poker

If you thought that playing poker was as easy as a child’s card game, then you’re highly mistaken. Poker is one card game that involves the skills and strategies of the player and doesn’t solely depend on luck. Sure you’re lucky if you’re dealt a clear straight but there may be times when you have the worst of cards and your playing strategies may convert them into the winning hand.

So what really is the game of poker all about? This game dates back to many centuries with a certain version of a similar game being called notoriously ‘the cheating game’ in the 19th century. But the popular game that we have now has also seen itself evolve into a lot of versions. Most played amongst poker games are the 5 Card game, 7 Card stud and Texas Hold’em. But the other variants of poker are also liked which include Omaha, Stud Poker, Manila, Draw Poker and Razz. The No limits Texas Hold’em is the one that has the world spinning around itself with its famous plays at the World Series of Poker.

From being a game that dwelled in many nooks and corners of the American neighbourhood to casinos across the globe to the online version, poker now has many umpteen players. The games popularity can be judged by its jargon being a part of the American and English lifestyle now. Phrases like beats me, blue chip, call one's bluff, ace in the hole, ace up one's sleeve etc have jumped off the poker table and spilled into everyday conversation.

Poker got its unprecedented popularity around the 70’s when the first formal poker tournaments came into being. The mainstay of poker, the World Series of Poker was started in 1970. Then the strategy books made their appearance followed by the introduction of Texas Hold’em and Omaha in Las Vegas, the casino capital of the world. Then came the movies and the rest is history. Poker has captured world wide attention and there are many facets of the game now.

Hundreds of online sites offer information about poker now and offer the facility of playing poker on the computer in real time. But the fun of this thrilling game remains in its physical form itself with the player interaction and the emotions involved. There are players who have taken up poker playing professionally while some also play poker as part timers. Some of the poker pros that this industry has known include Phil Helmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Johnny Chan, Doyle Brunson etc. Many of these renowned players have also found a place in the Poker hall of fame.
