Introduction to Razz poker:

Razz is a form of poker that is played similar to seven-card stud, with the main difference being that the lowest hand wins. Aces are always considered low and a flush or straight have little bearing on the low value of the hand. Learning how to play razz is not that complicated, but the betting rules are very specific. Each person entering a hand has to ante one fifth of the low bet limit and this ante is in addition to any future bets.

The Game Play:

The game is played in five rounds and in fixed betting there is a low and a high limit. For example, a 1-3 game would require that all low bets placed are $1 and any high bets equal $3. Once each player has been dealt two cards down and one card up, the player with the highest card places either a low bet or folds. If more than one person learning how to play razz has the same high card, the player closest to the dealer’s left makes the bet. Other players, in turn decide to see the bet, raise the bet or fold.

After the next card is dealt face up, the player with the high card again can bet, an amount equal to half of the low bet limit or the low limit and each player in turn can then choose to see the bet, raise or fold. In learning how to play razz it is important to know that all raises and subsequent bets must be equal to the low bet limit during the first rounds.

High Bet Limit Takes Over On Fifth Card:
When players are dealt the fifth card, face up all bets and raises must be at the high bet limit. This progresses through the sixth and seventh card as well until all players either have seven cards, three face down and four face up, or have folded out of the hand. Once all players have received their last card and made their last bet, the showdown occurs. The last player to make a bet shows his hand first and will show if they really understand how to play razz.

At the end of every hand the deal advances to the person directly clockwise to the last dealer and as people get better at knowing how to play razz, they will begin to develop a strategy of when they have better odds of getting a lower hand. As with all poker games table position can be used as an advantage. A hand consisting of an ace, 2, 3, 4 and 5 would be considered the lowest possible hand and when learning how to play razz remembering that the low hand wins is often confusing.
