| Badugi poker game originated in Korea. It is similar to Low Ball poker game and involves four cards and a triple draw.
The badugi poker game can be played by a minimum of two persons and a maximum of six persons. In badugi, the person with the lowest hand is declared as the winner. The winner should have the lowest four card hand possible and also keep in mind that all his cards are from different suites.
The game begins with the players being dealt four cards in a face down position. It is followed by the players calling for forced bet known as blinds. The player on the left hand of the card dealer calls for a small blind and the player on his left calls for the big blind. The big blind is double the amount of the small blind.
In the first round of betting, the players can opt for call (match the bet), raise (increase the bet size) or fold (discard the current hand) as the case may be. After the first round of betting, the players have the option to draw. It is during the draw that a player chooses to discard a card in his hand and get it replaced by a new card to improve his hand. A player can choose to discard all the four cards in hand and opt to draw four new cards from the dealer.
The badugi rule requires that each round of drawing cards is to be followed by a round of betting. So in all there is a total of four rounds of betting followed by three rounds of drawing cards (discarding the unwanted cards and getting them replaced).
The fourth round of betting is followed by a showdown. After the last round of betting if it is seen that there are two or more players left in the game, then the rule requires that the players reveal their cards in order to decide the winner.
The player with the lowest hand is declared the winner. The best hand possible consists of the ace of spades, 2 of clubs, 3 of diamonds and 4 of hearts i.e A-2-3-4. If two or more cards are from the same suit, then the rule is that the card with the highest value will not be counted and the remaining cards of the same suit will be counted as a single card.
Various online badugi poker portals provide a table that gives a detailed structure of the hands possible and the adjoining ranks. It takes more and more practice to get a grip over the hands. The rules of badugi poker are not tough and people find it rather easier to pick up this game quickly.
