Blog » Omaha Poker Game Myths

Omaha poker is becoming more popular as more and more players are enjoying the game as much as its counterpart Texas Holdem poker. To play the game you have to understand the basics, know the rules and learn the strategies. The strategies help to perform better while playing the game. There are number of variations in the game because of which it gets its popularity. The Hi-Lo Omaha poker offers the chance of splitting the pot between the highest card holder and lowest card holder. So, more people are playing till the river round. As with other games there are some myths associated with Omaha poker.

All games seem complicated to the beginners. Therefore Omaha poker too has gained reputation as a complicated game. Actually it is not even as complicated as Texas Holdem poker is and players can play it easily once you learn the rules and strategies.

Again coming to the starting hands it is a belief that Omaha poker has no best starting hand. This is a complete myth. In this game you have a starting hand like A23K which is much better than J965. The former hand can be much better in winning you the pot. If you get a random hand like the latter hand you are not likely to win. There will be somebody with better hand. Though there are no excellent hands in Omaha poker like Texas Holdem but there are winning starting hands which need to be played and rubbish hands which one should fold.

Another myth that goes with Omaha poker is that you never raise with a starting hand. This is not true. Like any other game the position of the player depends upon the raise. If a player has a good hand and has to play the first hand he can raise before flop comes on the table. The only problem here is that if he raises then the subsequent players with mediocre hands will fold without waiting for the flop. So the pot becomes low as there are fewer players on the table.

Players are little conservative about not raising with a low. This also comes from believing a myth that one should not do so. While playing the game you should risk a little money by raising with a low if you want to win. Get three quarter and use raising strategies. You should have no fear of getting quartered.

There is another myth that Aces do not win in Omaha poker. It’s not true. A good hand in Omaha can have aces and take you to winning the pot.
