The Advantage of Table Position

To the average Poker player the advantages of certain table position when playing poker may be obvious. To the rank novice it may not be as obvious. Players who act first are in “early position” and those who act after you are in “late position.” The players in late table position have the advantage of more information about the opponents at the table because they have more information based on their bets already placed.

Table Position

Additionally, the odds of having the best hand goes up as the number of players fold, so being in a later table position may be advantageous as other players begin to fold.

A blind is a forced bet placed into the pot by one or more players before the deal begins, in a way that simulates bets made during play. Those who have a blind table position are probably in the least advantageous spot. The “big blind,” on average, is the biggest money losing table position.

You may not be able to control your own position at the table, but knowing when you’re in a blind position or an early position can affect your bet; be more conservative in these spots. Let the game play out before making the bigger bets.
