Strategy & Tips » Pot Limit Omaha-Starting Hands

Your playing style doesn’t really matter when it comes to the winning of a 5 card Omaha poker game. If you want to win, the first and the most important thing that you should care about is your starting hand.

In Pot Limit Omaha you get twice the number of the cards that you get in a Hold’em game. So the hands should be played with the maximum equity possible. In a situation where you don’t have the pairs and potential combo draw and your opponent has the same, you are starting the game with a disadvantage and you can loose if your luck doesn’t favors you.

(Ah As Kh Ks) and (Ad Ac Td Jc) are the first and the second best starting hands in Omaha Poker. Now, if you compare the two starting hands, in only 33% of the games the first hand can win and around 41% of the games results in a tie.

The equity distribution in Omaha is really spread-out and the players rarely have a strong edge. More number of players in a game less is the equity. So, getting an edge in Omaha is very much possible. You can win the game and can earn profits out of it. But a winner also needs to suffer a lot.

Just imagine a game of Hold’em where you are holding the same A-K hand each time, and the opponent has the same hand of Q-T. This will help you to estimate the variance in an Omaha game that you may have to face.

Hitting a flop in Omaha is actually very difficult; however, if you are lucky enough to hit a flop, you can win around 60% equity or even more. In such situations also, the game can end in a draw.

If you are a beginner in Omaha, you should always try to play poker with the strongest starting hands. Some of the strongest hands in Omaha are-

A-A-K-K      K-Q-J-T      Q-Q-A-K
A-A-J-T      K-K-T-T      Q-Q-A-J
A-A-J-J      K-K-A-J      Q-Q-K-J
A-A-9-9      K-K-A-T      Q-Q-K-T

All the above mentioned hands are not double suited but they are some of the strongest hands with which you can start a game. For the beginners, the connected four-way hands can also be very useful while starting a game. These four-way hands can either be absolutely strong hands or absolutely weak hands which can avoid making big mistakes.

It is very necessary to chuck out the weak hands out of the game if you want to play a profitable Omaha game.
