Strategy & Tips » Omaha Hi Lo Strategy

The game of Omaha Hi-Lo is certainly increasing its popularity regularly among both live and online players. This online poker game is very active and aggressive in nature and seeing a flop in every hand is common for beginners.

Some basic points that you should always keep in mind while playing Omaha Hi- Lo:

• Do not raise until the hand is flop.
• Your main aim is always to win the pot. Winning both high and low should be your primary goal. This is very difficult to do but it is not impossible.
• Always try and fold on a flop.
• Play with the strongest starting hands.
• It is important to select the table very carefully. Always try to get into a game of more than five players who are seeing frequent flops.
• Quick calculation is must.
• Do not play a lot of starting hands.
• Do not go for a call while you only have a low potential.
• Do not raise with A-2 while you are in an early position of the game.

These are very general tips; however, if applied sensibly they can result in a profitable victory.

Omaha Hi-Lo or O8 is also known as the nut game. If you want to win the pot, you have to have a nut hand. Therefore, it is very important to be selective while playing hands.

The best hand to start with in the game of O8 is A-A-2-3 which should be double suited and after that comes A-A-2-4, again double suited. These hands are generally considered as the strongest hands since they can be used for both low and high, increasing the chances of scooping the pot. Some of the favored starting hands are

A-A-2-x
A-A-3-x
A-2-3-x
A-2-K-K
A-2-J-J
A-3-4-5
A-A-4-5
A-2-Q-Q
A-A-x-x
A-2-K-Q
A-2-x-x (suited ace)
A-3-K-K
J-Q-K-A
T-J-Q-K
Q-J-T-9

Beginners generally get over exited if they have a hand with an ace. A-2 will help in making a nut low more frequently compared to any other combination of two cards, the chances of losing money is high.

Folding hands that has two gaps such as A-4-5-9 is a better option. The chance for a straight is less than even 1 per cent and winning a low is rare scenario.

Hands like 6-7-8-9, 5-6-7-8, 4-5-6-7 and 3-4-5-6 are also not recommended since the chances of making nuts with these middle- connected hands are really low.
