Poker is one game that not only involves luck but the player’s skills as well. It is very important that he gets a good hand to play with but a good player can turn even a mediocre hand into a good one. So a player’s strategy is very important when playing poker. Many professional poker players have made strategies that are followed by the newer ones.
While there are separate strategies for playing the limit and no limit games of Texas Hold’em, Omaha and stud but there are some basic pointers that stay common for all the games. Many players follow different plays as part of their poker playing. A player can follow aggressive play which means using opens and raises or he can use passive play which means calls and checks. A player may also use bluffing play which means betting higher on inferior cards.
There are deceptive plays also to deceive other players into believing something. One such play is check raise in which a player checks early in a betting round hoping someone else would open. Slow play is also a deceptive play which is the complete opposite of bluffing. In this a player bets slowly and without standing hot while holding a strong hand instead of betting aggressively while holding a weak one. Another play strategy is drawing in which a players hand is complete and he needs more cards to make it better. Isolation play is usually a raise that is done to make other players fold.
Position play also makes a lot of difference in poker. Table position is the order in which the players are seated around the poker table. Players who act first are in early position and those who act later are in late position. Positioning is related to many other poker strategies also. There is also the protection play where in a player makes a bet with a strong hand such as top pair in a situation where flush or straights are also possible. Stealing is also another form of poker play. Stealing the ante becomes a very important factor in Hold’em specially.
Many players like to look at odds and probabilities while in a round of poker. In poker the pot odds are worked out by the ratio of the current pot to the cost of calling the current bet. The implied odds on a hand are based not on the money currently in the pot, but on the expected size of the pot at the end of the hand. Skilled poker players calculate the odds and probability while making the strategy to play.
There are also some players who like to read fellow gamblers faces and decide on their course of action. One thing to note is that using various strategies entirely depends upon which variant of poker you are playing and whether it is a limit or no limit game. But whatever the version may be it is important to keep in mind these basis concepts and rules of the game.
