Strategy & Tips » General 5 Card Stud Strategy

One of the most important strategies of playing 5 Card Stud is card selection. For example, you should withdraw if you get cards like Ace, Queen, or 3,2,7. Even while playing small blind you should at least have a pair.

Five Card stud is one of the few types of poker where one player can see the cards of all the other players but one. This is the reason why it is very important to keep a check on each and every move played by all the players while at the table. People often make careless mistakes by picking up a card folded by another player during the game. These errors should be avoided.

In an early position of the game, it is very risky to play the straight draws and flushes. This might cause a re-raise making the draw more valuable. This should be avoided mainly during a bet with no boundary.

If 3 cards are drawn, the other players come to know that you have a pair. So in order to bluff the opponents, some people pick up 2 cards. The game structure of all the players should always be followed. A call before the draw and then drawing 2 cards might indicate a pair being possessed by that certain player. A raise may give you a hint of trips.

1 card drawn by a player may again hint the possession of 2 pairs and sometimes even straight draws and flush. Here, before drawing the cards, you should combine the bet particularly for that player. Most players will not largely increase their bets having drawing hands. A player playing blind, who does not increase the bet and the draws a card might play a ‘free shot’.

When the trips are held, particularly heavy trips like triple aces, one can bluff the players by drawing only one 1 card.

When you are lucky to get a ‘pat hand’ prior to the draw, like a flush or a full house, it is advisable to establish your pot as soon as possible. No information about the strength of your hand is to be given out to the opponents.

With king pairs, three cards should be drawn. If the pairs are kept and the new cards are drawn, there is a chance of making you hand better.

Keeping these simple strategies in mind and concentrating on the game while watching the moves by the opponents, can give them a good run for their real money poker chips. Good luck!!
